Nbme Forms Step 1: How to Access, Purchase, and Interpret Your Score Report

For several years before these forms were released, there were also 6 forms available except that they were forms 13, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19. These forms were retired by the NBME on March 25th, 2019 with an exception to form 18.

The usual pattern observed in the release and retirement of forms tends to be in the early of March, and they usually just retire one form then replace it with another one. However, it was the first time in many years that NBME has retired so many forms all at once.

It is for this reason that when using the NBME Practice Exams for Step 1, med students are advised to start with the lowest numbered forms. NBME is observed to first retire the lowest-numbered forms rather than the succeeding numbered forms.

In other words, these forms are updated and always in line with the latest released version of Step 1. Since this is the case, there is no use for you to access older forms of the NBME Practice Exams.

Speaking of retired forms, it looks like the NBME has made the NBME Practice Exams available for free starting April 3 through May 31. This is mainly due to the possibility of testing delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On the other hand, on April 2, 2020, NBME has now included explanations for NBME Self-Assessments on Medicine forms 5 and 6 of the Clinical Mastery Series. NBME has also assured that students can look forward to answer explanations on additional and upcoming Self-Assessment forms later this 2020.

There would be no reason for the newly released NBME Practice Exams to not be predictive since NBME always releases new forms and retires old forms to remain aligned to the latest version of Step 1. Hence, its predictive power will remain as they were in the retired forms.

However, as of March 24th*, 2021, the NBME will be retiring all of the old CBSSA NBME forms and replacing them with 6 new NBME forms. Per the NBME, these test forms will need to be started and completed no later than 90 days after purchase, thus if they are purchased just before the deadline then June 22nd would be the last day to use them.

The replacement forms are all being rolled out on March 24th, 2021. NBME CBSSA Form 25, Form 26, Form 27, Form 28, Form 29, and Form 30 will be released and the retirement of the old NBME forms will commence. This is a big deal for nearly every student preparing for Step 1.

Over the next few days, we will examine many of these questions regarding this switch from the old NBME forms to the new forms. Once the new NBME CBSSA forms are released, you can expect that all of the tutors at Elite Medical Prep will be aware of the clinical material covered.

When you receive the permit by email, make sure that everything is accurate. You will be required to bring the scheduling permit with you on Exam Day. This is the final step in your USMLE Step 1 application, but there is still more to do regarding completing registering for USMLE Step 1

Three new forms (Forms 20, 21, and 22) of the Comprehensive Basic Science Self-Assessment (CBSSA) will be available on MyNBME on March 25, 2019. In late spring of 2019, two additional new forms of CBSSA (Forms 23 and 24) will be available. The performance feedback provided will remain the same.

CBSSA Forms 13, 15, 16, 17, and 19 will be retired when the new forms are released. CBSSA Form 18 will continue to be available to purchase. Participants who purchased CBSSA Forms 13, 15, 16, 17, or 19 prior to March 25th will have 90 days to launch and complete their self-assessment. Participants will receive a performance profile following the completion of the self-assessment.

You should also take into account your timeline. For April/May 2019 test-takers, the three to-be-released Self-Assessment forms are plenty. As such, you may not need to purchase any additional Self-Assessments.

Registering for Step 1 is a multi-step process that will take two to four weeks. After the initial registration on the NBME website, the Office of Student Records verifies each student's enrollment and good standing. Once this is complete, students will receive an email regarding how to schedule their exams. Students should complete this process by January 15th of the year in which Step 1 will be taken to maximize chances of obtaining desired location and date for testing. Students MUST complete Step 1 before beginning 3rd-year clerkships.

The NBME-style of questions can take a little bit of time getting used to for some students. For this reason, many students see bigger variations between their NBME scores on different NBME forms when compared to their UWSA scores.

Since 2001, there has been a strong plea to remove the Step 1 score barrier that disproportionately affects select racial and ethnic groups. "Using Step 1 scores to screen residency applications puts students who are underrepresented in medicine at a disadvantage."[33] Black and Latino students receive markedly lower scores on Step 1 than white students.[26] The mean USMLE step 1 score was significantly greater among white applicants (223) as compared to black and Hispanic applicants (216).[34] Depending on the threshold score, an African American was 3-6x less likely to be offered an interview.[35]

During the months of November and December, we will return forms to the NBME once a week via FedEx priority overnight. Once your application is complete, the NBME will send you an email notifying you that your scheduling permit is available. Your scheduling permit will allow you to sign up for a test location and time. Lastly, you will need to visit the Prometric website to schedule your test date.

A strategic approach to studying for Step 1 like this will help you get a better return on your studying efforts. But the application is difficult because there are different solutions which address one or two steps, but not the others.

The University of Massachusetts Medical school Education Policy Committee has previously passed policy related to Step 1 USMLE that states students are required to take United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) Step 1 prior to the beginning of their Core Clinical Experiences (CCE) year and to pass USMLE step 1 before continuing in the CCE year. Additionally, MD/PhD students are required to take and pass Step 1 prior to entry into the graduate school of biomedical sciences (GSBS). Due to the Coronavirus pandemic Prometric testing centers announced their closure for a period of 30 days starting March 18th, 2020. There exists the strong possibility that these centers will extend this closure beyond 30 days and the opening date is unknown at this time. This prevents some members of our current UMMS class of 2022 from starting clinical rotations as anticipated June 1st because they cannot take Step 1.
