An original idea for this movie had Godzilla fighting the original 1954 Godzilla in ghost form. The project, "Godzilla vs. Ghost Godzilla", was scrapped because the producers thought Godzilla didn't need to fight a clone version of himself for three movies in a row, following Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II (1993) ("Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla") and Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla (1994) ("Godzilla vs. Spacegodzilla"). It opted for this idea instead.
Columbia TriStar Home Video (formally later known as Sony Pictures Home Entertainment) released the film and Godzilla VS Spacegodzilla on home video on January 19, 1999, the first time that either film had been officially released in the United States. TriStar used the Toho dubs, but cut the end credits and created new titles and opening credits for both films. The complete Toho international version of Godzilla vs. Destoroyah has been broadcast on several premium movie channels since the early 2000s to the present time showing on Crackle and having been released on the 2014 Blu-ray.

Godzilla Vs. Spacegodzilla: The powers of telepathy enter the ranks of high technology in this supernatural, super-powered Godzilla(r) adventure for the '90s! The military minds behind Japan's special Counter G Bureau enter the New Age with Project T, in which a telepathic amplifier is implanted in Godzilla(r)'s brain in order to bring the giant monster under control. And just in time! In a faraway galaxy, the mutant Space Godzilla turns its evil eyes toward earth, planning to terminate Godzilla(r) and conquer the planet for its own. With the Japanese Mafia infiltrating Counter G, the Bureau needs all the help it can get. Will Japan's greatest enemy Godzilla(r) become its closest ally? Amid all the smoke and high-tech firepower, not even the psychics know for sure!
The Millennium era of Godzilla movies goes in the opposite direction of the Heisei era, with virtually no film in this period sharing any continuity with each other (Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla and Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. being the only exceptions). Its tone is a mix of the previous two eras, but the primarily villainous characterization of Godzilla is closer to the Heisei period.
The colonists regroup after their disastrous attack on Godzilla at the end of the first movie and learn of a mysterious facility containing nanometal that was used to create Mechagodzilla. The nanometal can apparently be revived and used against Godzilla - the only catch is, the nanometal needs to assimilate living hosts (willing or otherwise) in order to work. The nanometal predictably turns out to be a bigger treat to the planet than even Godzilla, resulting in a real Empire Strikes Back downer of a climax that teases the next film.
Viewer Review: "The most moving and thrilling of all Godzilla films, with a solid plot, smooth acting, moving music and emotional drama. Spacegodzilla actually stomps God was no match for him destroysh is not as smart as Godzilla therefore he won't figure out that spaceG has a power source a near limitless one he has telekinetic powers aswell as Cosmic powers destroyah is man made of the oxygen destroyer hence his name it took 4 shots of the spiral beam from Godzilla on a ALREADY SEVERELY WEAKENED SpaceG to put him down not to mention Godzilla had to destroy the Tower PLUS his crystals for that to even work if he didn't i think SpaceG would've reflected the red beam like he did Godzillas atomic beam. Imho there's no way in hell destroysh can beat SpaceG unless he get in Close and out might him but spaceG is farr too versatile and smart and powerful for destroyah he is the most powerful Godzilla up there with FinalWars Godzilla and Burning Godzilla his powers are freaking insane this thing is a COSMIC BEING created through a black hole in sorry but destroyah a oxygen destroyer kaiju gets curb stomped here...destroyah vs Biollante or Orga would be a better match.
Good fight, but since Destroyah probably wouldn't target Spacegodzilla's energy supply. Spacegodzilla meanwhile is more versatile and took on MOGUERA and Godzilla at the same time. Destroyah doesn't have anything to destroy the shoulder crystals and energy attacks don't damage them as shown when MOGUERA and Godzilla both hit them with their energy attacks and they just lit up. Spacegodzilla also tanked MOGUERA's firepower which knocked out Godzilla. Destroyah may damage SG's skin, but the crystal armor under it should hold. Destroyah meanwhile does not truly regenerate but reform. Destroy enough aggregate Destroyahs and the final form Destroyah can't be made anymore. It just may take a while to do that.
@takenstew22: that just did external damage. It's just bad effectsakong it look like Destroyah cut right through him. We see the wounds immediately after and it's not that bad. Godzilla was hardly slowed down after the initial pain. Godzilla may have had more energy than before, but he was also dying when fighting Destroyah. Spacegodzilla fought a fully healthy Godzilla and MOGUERA at the same time and only lost due to strategy Destroyah wouldn't think of.
@phillip33: Destroyah doesn't truly regen, it just reforms. Destroyah is less energy resistant than Spacegodzilla unless SG's shoulder crystals shatter. Destroyah has no explosives and laser horn isn't can only do surface level damage. SG is easily on or above Burning Godzilla level at full power. He only needed two corona beams to knock Godzilla down (which he can spam more often than Destroyah's oxygen destroyer beam).
@takenstew22: Moguera ko'd Godzilla indirectly with its firepower and Spacegodzilla tanked it and countered. Without human strategy, Godzilla was outclassed by Spacegodzilla whereas he could eventually beat Destroyah if he wasn't on a tine limit due to burning mode killing him. It was 2 vs. 1 for SG and Godzilla's healing factor wasn't being affected by his own power. Spacegodzilla can spam his beam a lot more than Destroyah and two blasts can knock over Godzilla not due to the force of the beam like Destroyah's, but bc it actually does concentrated damage. Watch how Godzilla falls from their beams. Destroyah would eventually lose as its aggregates die. It doesn't have true regen. Spacegodzilla not only has his own energy pulse to deal with aggregates, but can keep spamming energy blasts as long as his crystal fortress is standing. SG also has true regeneration like Godzilla on all but his crystal parts. Moguera's drill attack drew blood but the wound disappeared in seconds. Destroyah doesn't have the endurance and SG's corona beam is comparable to the spiral ray and can be curved to almost always hit the target.
Kenichi tells her that Godzilla took power from the nuclear blast that destroyed "Birth Island", "but maybe the others didn't survive it". Others? Plural? This is similar to the comment made at the end of Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II. Who are these "others?". Why didn't we see them on the island in Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla? Is this a wink that Birth Island is really Monster Island, and Anguirus and all our other buddies have been there hanging out with Godzilla but the Heisei period is too serious to show it? Or is it just a bad translation in our dub?
They don't even consider leaving Junior out of it and talking directly to Godzilla. Miki seemed to do that in Godzilla vs. Biollante, and that's at least what was said was happening in vs. Mechagodzilla II. With the added power of Meru behind her, you'd think they'd give it a shot.
But don't let me make it sound like it's all bad. The fact that i'm even talking about whether or not a movie is thematically coherent tells you something about the Heisei series compared to Showa. And it was nice seeing Junior grow up (all at once!). Destoroyah is at least an interesting monster; better than the idea of having Godzilla fight the ghost of the 1954 version, which was the original plan (and which i guess we'll see a version of in 2002's Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla). For now that decision was abandoned since Godzilla had already fought doppelgangers of himself in the last two movies. And the visual of Godzilla in meltdown mode is pretty cool. And the actual end of the film, with Junior getting revived, is great. It's just a shame that some other elements got bungled. 2ff7e9595c
